year 9 options
Halfway through Year 9, students will be given an option to choose to study GCSE Photography in Year 10 and 11. Here is some helpful information about this:
I’m thinking of choosing GCSE Photography for my options – how can I find out more?
Look at the GCSE Photography link page on this website and see what kind of work you will need to do. Look at the examples of work produced by other students.
Talk to other students who have done or are doing photography at the minute. Ask them how they feel about choosing the subject, the time commitment required, whether they regret their choice or not. Sometimes it helps to hear how other students feel about the course to give you a better perspective on things.
Essential Requirements:
You must have your own digital camera (you cannot use the camera on your phone or ipad).
You will also need a USB stick to store and save your photographs.
Written work and drawing skills are now assessed elements for this course.
You need to be someone who is independent, organised and has good time management skills. You need to be able to stay up to date with deadlines.
You need to have good IT skills or at least be willing and eager to improve your IT skills.
You will need to be confident and be able to go and organise people to pose for you and travel to places to take photographs on weekends or after school. Most of your photographs will be taken for homework outside of lesson time as lesson time will be spent editing your photos and completing book work.
GCSE Photography is a 2 year course so everything you do in Year 10 and 11 counts towards your final GCSE grade. There are 2 coursework projects worth 60% of your final grade and an exam project worth 40% of your final grade. There is a 10 hour/2 day exam at the end of Year 11 where you need to complete a final piece and book work for your exam project under exam conditions.
Come and speak to staff in the Art Department to discuss any other questions you might have.
